By employing 9 people on average, e-commerce vendors generate about 15.8 million jobs, including 3.5 million jobs for women, revealed a recent survey by the policy research institute, Pahle India Foundation.
“Each e-commerce vendor employs about 9 people, about 2 of whom are female on average, while each offline vendor employs about 6 people, about 1 of whom is female,” the report said.
The survey’s results show that, in comparison to offline sellers, internet retailers employ 54 per cent more individuals on average and nearly twice as many women. The survey, which emphasised the expansion of job prospects in retail functions, stated that almost 17 per cent of all jobs created by online vendors were in the marketing sector, with management and operations, sourcing, customer service, warehousing, logistics, and other areas following closely behind.
Remarkably, the study stated that two-thirds of the online retailers contracted out their shipping, warehousing, and logistics.
It’s possible that e-retail has significantly increased employment in related industries like delivery, logistics, related infrastructure, etc. Outsourcing is done for a variety of reasons, including affordability (83 per cent) and reliability (70 per cent). According to the research, Blue Dart, Ecom Express, DTDC, Mahindra Logistics, and Ekart Logistics are the top five logistics partners for online retailers.
In categories other than food and groceries, vendors on Myntra employ the most individuals—11 on average—while vendors on Flipkart and Amazon employ about 8 people on average. The average number of employees employed by each seller on Snapdeal and Meesho is 10 and 9, respectively, according to the research.
