A Michigan consumer, Dorothy Monahan, has reportedly filed a complaint in US District Court against Walmart Stores, on the issue of selling products falsely labelled “100% Egyptian Cotton”. The complaint accuses the retailer of violating US laws governing textile fibre labelling and advertising.
According to the complaint, Walmart questioned the fibre content of Welspun India’s products as early as 2008, but waited until two months ago to halt sales of its mislabelled Egyptian cotton bed linens, following a similar halt by Target Corp. The complainant overpaid at a Walmart for Better Homes and Gardens bed linens made by Welspun and seeks damages for the same.

The company plans to vigorously defend itself. According to a statement release by Walmart, “Walmart removed such products after conducting a comprehensive review nearly two months ago and since then has offered customers a full refund.”
It may be mentioned that Egyptian cotton has long cotton fibres that contribute to a finer, lighter, softer and more durable fabric. The retailer also sold Welspun bed linen under the “Canopy” name and discontinued its sale in September after the company’s inability to assure that its products were 100 percent Egyptian cotton.
