In its endeavour to minimise packaging waste across its supply chain, Amazon India on Wednesday revealed its plans of expanding its Packaging-Free Shipping (PFS) initiative to over 100 cities in the country.
PFA, a sustainable packaging solution, facilitates customer orders to be shipped in their original boxes or covers either without any extra packaging or with considerably reduced packaging.
The e-commerce giant first launched PFS in the country in June last year in nine cities, Amazon said in a statement. It further took pride in sharing that the success of the initiative has now led them to be able to expand it to over 100 cities within a year.
It must be noted here that more than 40 per cent of customer orders shipped from the company’s Fulfilment Centres are now packaging-free or have significantly reduced packaging.
The company also informed that PFS enables multiple customer orders to be carried in re-usable tote bags during deliveries, ensuring security.
Further explaining the process, Amazon India said that the PFS will be applied to orders based onthree key parameters – product category, customer location, and distance to be covered by the order.
The company is using machine learning algorithms to ensure the protection of the packaging that depends on the product as well as transportation conditions.
Product categories that Amazon India is shipping packaging-free include tech accessories, home and home improvement items, shoes and luggage.
On the other hand, products like liquids, fragile items and personal care articles that require extra protection during transportation will continue to be shipped with packaging.
