Recently, a Dhaka court handed down a six-month jail sentence to Alesha Mart’s chairman, Manjurul Alam Sikder, and his wife, Sabia Chowdhury, in a bank cheque dishonour case.
Additionally, the court imposed a fine of Taka 346,500 on the couple.
This is as per reports, which added the order was issued by Judge Tasruzzaman of the Second Joint Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court of Dhaka.
Arrest warrants were issued against the convicted individuals as they were found to be absconding during the pronouncement of the judgment.
According to the case statement, a buyer named Nuruzzaman Ripon ordered a motorcycle from Alesha Mart on 8th June 2021, at a discounted rate.
Despite paying Taka 250,310 through mobile banking as per his order, the buyer did not receive the motorcycle even after 45 days.
Failing to deliver the motorcycle, Alesha Mart authorities provided the buyer with a cheque of Taka 346,500 on 28th December 2021. Later, when the plaintiff submitted the cheque for encashment at Sonali Bank Ltd on 20th March 2022, it bounced.
He contacted Alesha Mart several times over the matter, but no remedial steps were taken by the company, according to the case statements. On 19th May 2022, he filed a case against Alesha Mart over the matter.
