Mukul Knitwear Ltd., a readymade garment manufacturer based in Gazipur, has permanently closed its factory, citing prolonged financial distress triggered by weak global demand, a sharp fall in purchase orders and rising production costs.
Factory officials said the decision was taken against the backdrop of a sustained global economic slowdown that has placed severe pressure on exporters. Managing Director Moinul Islam Mukul formally informed the authorities of the closure through a written application submitted to the Deputy Director General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments.
Workers arriving for duty on Wednesday morning found a notice announcing the permanent closure displayed at the factory gate. The plant is located on Ambag Road in the Nil Nagar area of Konabari, within Gazipur Metropolitan City.
In his application, the MD stated that despite the factory’s long history of exporting garments to overseas markets, the combination of shrinking orders, escalating production costs and acute financial constraints had made continued operations unviable. He confirmed that the factory had been declared permanently closed with effect from 17th December, in accordance with Section 28(Ka) of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006 (as amended) and Rule 32 of the Bangladesh Labour Rules 2015.
The application also noted that arrangements would be made to settle workers’ and employees’ dues through discussions, in line with prevailing rules and regulations.
