Workers at a readymade garment (RMG) factory in Gazipur’s Tongi area staged a protest by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, demanding the payment of one month’s unpaid wages. The demonstration led to traffic congestion on both sides of the highway for approximately an hour on Saturday morning.
The protest began around 9:00 am near Hossain Market, where approximately 1,300 workers employed at BHIS Apparels Limited, located on Ledu Molla Road, halted work and gathered to demand their overdue wages. As the workers blocked the highway adjacent to the factory, vehicular movement was disrupted, causing significant delays for commuters.
Police, along with members of the Industrial Police and the Bangladesh Army, responded promptly to the scene. Authorities engaged in negotiations with the protesting workers, assuring them that their wages would be settled soon by the factory management. Following this assurance, the workers lifted the blockade around 10:00 am on Saturday, restoring normal traffic flow.
AKM Zahirul Islam, superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police, confirmed that vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway is now back to normal. The incident highlights ongoing concerns over wage payments within the garment sector and the importance of resolving such disputes swiftly to maintain industrial peace.
