Garment workers in Bangladesh, who have been engaged in protests, are now gradually resuming work as an anticipated pay increase is on the cards by the Minimum Wage Board.
This development comes after more than 11 tumultuous days marked by violent demonstrations that sadly resulted in the loss of at least two garment workers’ lives.
The garment workers have been engaged in protests calling for a minimum wage of Taka 23,000, which allegedly caused disruptions in production for major brands and retailers as many apparel units called off production temporarily.
Recently, State Minister for Labour and Employment Ministry Begum Monnujan Sufian claimed the new salary structure will be declared in the sixth round of the meeting of the wage board even as she hinted at launching ration cards for the workers so that they can buy essential commodities at cheaper prices.
The salary to be proposed by the ministry however could not be known.
