Recently, the Bangladesh Economic Zones (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was successfully passed in the Jatiya Sangsad.
This bill aims to streamline the establishment of economic zones within the country through government-to-government partnerships with other nations.
Minister of Liberation War Affairs, AKM Muzammel Huq, introduced the bill, and it received unanimous approval through voice votes in the House, with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presiding.
The amended law now permits the creation of economic zones within the areas of city corporations, municipalities, and cantonment boards.
This is a relaxation of the existing law, which had previously restricted the establishment of economic zones within these specific areas.
The need for this provision arose when several developed countries expressed interest in investing in specialised economic zones to be established on a government-to-government basis in Bangladesh.
This amended law is designed to facilitate the establishment of such economic zones within the country.
