Amazon India made waves in the e-commerce industry with the introduction of its groundbreaking floating store on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir. This innovative move not only strengthens the company’s delivery network but also empowers local businesses in the region.
As part of its ‘I Have Space’ last-mile delivery program, Amazon India unveiled the floating store on Dal Lake. The program utilises local resources to ensure swift delivery within a 2 to 4 kilometre radius, effectively addressing the final step in the supply chain.
Overseeing the operations of the floating store is Murtaza Khan Kashi, the owner of the houseboat Select Town. Kashi’s responsibility includes delivering packages daily to other houseboats on the lake, thereby enhancing Amazon’s delivery network while providing additional income opportunities for small businesses like his.
Since its launch in early June, the floating store has become a reliable delivery source for customers around Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake. Karuna Shankar Pande, the Director of Amazon Logistics in India, lauded the venture for its potential to offer dependable, swift, and efficient deliveries to customers in the region.
This pioneering step has the potential to transform delivery systems not only in Srinagar but also in other regions, setting a new precedent for e-commerce operations in India.
