UK shoppers have showcased their love for online shopping by spending a staggering £ 581 million during the highly anticipated Amazon Prime Day event.
This year’s figures follow the trend set in the previous year, where global shoppers collectively splurged over US $ 3 billion on more than 100 million products from small-scale businesses, emphasising Amazon’s commitment to supporting and promoting these enterprises.
The first day of Prime Day not only solidified its position as a commercial phenomenon but also made history as Amazon’s most profitable sales day ever recorded. The event, which has been a tradition since 2015, saw members of Amazon’s exclusive Prime club purchasing over 375 million items worldwide. In the United States alone, shoppers spent a staggering US $ 12.7 billion, according to data compiled by Adobe Analytics.
The data also revealed a notable surge of 24 per cent in apparel sales during the Prime Day period, highlighting the appeal of the event for fashion-conscious consumers seeking great deals.
“The first day of Prime Day was the largest sales day in Amazon’s history, and Prime members saved more this year than any other Prime Day event,” said Doug Herrington, CEO of Amazon Stores. “Prime is an incredible value, and we’re proud to offer additional value for members through exclusive deals events like Prime Day. Thank you to our Prime members for continuing to shop in our store, and to our employees and independent sellers around the world who delivered for customers this Prime Day.”
Experts believe that consumers who have been experiencing persistent inflation and an uncertain economic environment, are embracing more flexible ways to manage their spending during events like Prime Day. Additionally, the revenue growth attributed to Buy Now Pay Later options predicted similar trends in the months ahead, particularly as the holiday shopping season approaches.
As online shopping continues to gain popularity, events like Amazon Prime Day provide consumers with a wide range of products and exclusive deals, while offering retailers and small businesses a lucrative platform to showcase their offerings.
