Punjab Government applied for the Centre’s mega textile park scheme but later withdrew its application stating the non-availability of land as the reason, as per the Union Minister for Commerce, Industry and Textiles, Piyush Goyal,
He was answering questions during a press conference after the conclusion of the India-US Trade Policy forum held in Washington DC. The Minister urged the Punjab Government to become more proactive and competitive so that they can seek better investment opportunities and compete for incentives from the Centre.
“The Centre has unveiled production-linked incentive schemes across sectors and does not discriminate between states. In fact, under the PM Mitra scheme, the Centre is building seven mega textile parks for which applications were invited. Punjab applied and then withdrew its application saying it did not have the land. So even if we want, we cannot consider Punjab under the scheme,” the Minister said.
“We are proud that the Sikh community has made its mark worldwide by the dint of hard work,” he added.
Meanwhile, for the establishment of the textile park under the Central Government scheme PM MITRA (Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel), at least nine states had submitted proposals including Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana, as informed by Darshana Jardosh, Union Minister of State for Textile and Railways in March last year.
