Notwithstanding the growing emphasis on lessening dependence on a single product when it comes to export, readymade garments continue to hold the sway when it comes to Bangladesh’s exports.
Media reports maintained this even if citing figures from the country’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), apparels fetched 82 per cent of the US $ 52 billion export receipts in the last fiscal year.Notably, garment sector accounted for 68 per cent of the national exports in the fiscal year of 1996-97.
Speaking to the media, analysts, reportedly, claimed lack of focus on prioritising potential products away from non-garment items; inadequate funds and the so-called policy discrimination were the major factors that have discouraged new exporters.
Meanwhile, the former Special Adviser for the employment sector at the International Labour Office in Geneva, Rizwanul Islam, stated that considering the current uncertainty in the global economy, the risk of over-reliance on just one export item is even greater.
