Close on heels of Bangladesh’s apex garment makers’ body the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) shooting a letter to the high street retail empire Edinburgh Woollen Mill (EWM) to pay up suppliers’ pending dues, EWM has responded saying that it was engaging with the suppliers ‘with best intentions’ but was critical of the move by the traders’ body.
The sincerity of this letter has left a bitter taste in our mouth, reportedly underlined EWM spokesperson claimed media reports, who further maintained this move as ‘uncollaborative and unproductive’.
It may be mentioned here that EWM came in for criticism recently following its alleged order cancellations worth US $ 8.2 million placed with its various vendors in Bangladesh from the country’s apex garment makers’ body, which threatened to blacklist it for neither paying the vendors nor responding to the suppliers’ queries.
But the EWM has now reportedly claimed that it had paid up for future stocks when coronavirus crisis hit the industry and is now in discussions with the suppliers about the remainder.
