The apex garment makers body in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association or BGMEA, has called upon the transportation service providers as well as transport workers to refrain from announcing protests and strikes that have an adverse bearing on trade.
Addressing a recent view exchange meeting organised by the garment makers’ body at its Chittagong office, current Acting President of BGMEA, Syed Nazrul Islam, reportedly, maintained this even as he underlined that some organisations related to import- and export-based logistic support very often enforce work abstentions, disrupting trade.
It may be mentioned here that transportation and operations at the Chittagong Port, which handles bulk of import-export activity including garments shipment, were badly hit recently after two organisations observed a 36-hour work abstention since 21 September over their 15-point demand even as in the meanwhile, the Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van, Tank Lorry, Prime Mover Owners and Workers’ Coordination Council has, reportedly, called a 48-hour work abstention from 27 September.
