Tech giant Google has released Doppl, an app that uses AI to enable users to try on clothes virtually by using animated replicas of themselves.
Created by Google Labs, the firm’s research laboratory for developing experimental products, Doppl extends Google Shopping’s previous virtual try-on feature, which allowed users to preview clothes by uploading images. Doppl takes the idea further by converting static images into dynamic, animated graphics that simulate how clothing could fit in actual motion.
Users can virtually try on a vast number of clothing—tops, bottoms, and dresses—and even combine to design and save individualised outfits. The app also supports uploads of clothing photos seen on social media or in nearby shops, with the creation of a short AI-generated video of the outfit on the user’s digital avatar.
However, Doppl currently doesn’t support footwear, swimwear, lingerie, or accessories. And because it’s still in development, results may be inconsistent—such as auto-generating matching pants or shoes when only a shirt is uploaded. Google acknowledges these early-stage imperfections and notes that improvements to visual realism and garment fit are ongoing.
Doppl is currently accessible on both Android and iOS, but only to United States users. An international launch has yet to be announced.
The app release comes after Google’s previous foray into virtual try-on technology in 2023, which used real-world models of varying body types. Doppl is part of a rapidly expanding market of AI-based fashion apps, rivaling up-and-comers such as Glance AI, as tech giants further seek to revolutionise the online shopping experience.
