Industry is working on many innovations, taking property inspirations from already existing natural miracles. Anti-odour sportswear from the shells of crustaceans, antimicrobial medical devices inspired by shark skin, and protective clothing with bioluminescent properties resulting from studies of fireflies, jellyfish and eels are some of the examples where the properties of certain naturally occurring material are used to create innovative performance apparel.
Biomimicry is the study of designs, models and systems in nature for the purpose of imitating and adapting them or gaining inspiration from them to create practical solutions to everyday problems. Animals, insects, plants and other living organisms have evolved over billions of years in order to survive and adapt in dynamic environments, and many natural adaptations have proved to be more effective than man-made solutions.
