The concept of patch work transcends the traditional crafty definition to a more inventive one this season. The technique has emerged to become one of the major trends with a plenitude of variations, putting together different sections of fabrics and textiles to achieve a mishmash of prints, patterns, textures and tones. Runways and retailers have already attested to the trend by supporting it with a multitude of options, the standouts being Proenza Schouler’s perforated patchwork skirt, Derek Lam’s jacquard pants, Zara’s snakeskin pattern T-shirt and Topshop’s print shift dress.
The silhouette may range from tops, bottoms and allovers whether it is shirts or jackets, skirts or pants or casual dresses. Different versions of denim on denim can be used for casual pieces whereas patches of leather may be incorporated for a more orderly and chic look. In addition to the actual patchwork different types and categories of prints may be used to enhance the overall effect.
