According to reports from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), cotton exports from Egypt plunged by 69.7 per cent in the third quarter of the agricultural season 2013-14. The country exported 106,500 metric Kentar of cotton in March-May 2014 against 351,700 metric Kentar of exports last year. CAPMAS said the decrease in cultivated area of cotton resulted in the plunge as farmers favoured to grow other crops which are more profitable. The quantity of ginned cotton reached 395,000 metric Kentar during the third quarter against 485,900 metric Kentar of ginned cotton during the same period of the earlier season, marking a drop of 18.7 per cent.

A textile dyeing facility collapsed in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, killing six people and injuring 22. The authorities blamed the accident on the poor construction of the factory building. According to Gamal Al-Taruti, Head of the Interior Ministry’s public safety department explained the cause of the disaster to be a design defect in the building. “The building did not meet construction standards,” he told the media. An initial investigation found that the accident was caused by the unauthorized construction of a third floor at the factory. An entrepreneur involved in the construction was detained, while arrest warrants were issued for two others as well as the owners of the building.
