India’s exports of technical textile goods declined marginally by 1.2% in dollar terms during April–October 2025 compared with the same period a year earlier, largely due to tariffs imposed by the United States.
According to data from the Man-made and Technical Textiles Export Promotion Council (MATEXIL), exports of technical textiles were valued at US $ 1.95 billion during the first seven months of the current fiscal year, compared with US $ 1.97 billion in the corresponding period of 2024. However, shipments recorded a growth of 2.3% in rupee terms over the same period, reflecting currency movements.
Exports registered month-on-month growth between April and September, but this trend reversed in October. Shipments in October 2025 fell sharply to US $ 249.7 million, compared with US $ 305.5 million in October 2024.
Geotextiles, medical textiles and packaging materials accounted for a significant share of outbound shipments. Products such as flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC) bags, slings, ropes, gauze and wipes together made up nearly 60% of total technical textile exports during April–October 2025, followed by technical fabrics, which accounted for 27.7%, MATEXIL stated.
The United States remained the largest market for Indian technical textiles, accounting for 25.9% of total exports during the period, followed by Germany with a 6% share and the United Kingdom with 5%. However, exports to the US between April and October 2025 were 15% lower than in the same period last year.
Council officials noted that the imposition of tariffs had adversely affected exports. They added that Indian goods could not easily be redirected to alternative markets such as Vietnam or Bangladesh, as those countries were also witnessing subdued demand for their products. An official further explained that goods manufactured for customers in one country could not be easily diverted to other markets due to product specifications and contractual constraints.
MATEXIL cautioned that if the tariff issue remained unresolved, India’s technical textile exports could face a sharper downturn in the coming months.
