A senior official in the Department of Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi has stated that the Tamil Nadu Government will shortly release a textile policy that will solve the current problems facing the state’s textile and garment industry.
Recently, the department met with stakeholders in Chennai. According to the person, the policy would be released soon after the last round of deliberations. The 2019 textile policy would be enhanced and made more pertinent to the industry’s current demands. According to the official, “The policy will definitely address the current issues faced by the industry.”
Industry leaders who attended the meeting stated that the policy should concentrate on modernising the current facilities because Tamil Nadu has excess capacity throughout the textile value chain. Support was needed to upgrade the traditional powerlooms by either retrofitting the old ones or investing in new ones. Common Effluent Treatment Plants’ problems with disposing of the sludge produced by effluent treatment should also be covered by the policy.
The Southern India Mills Association would draft a report on the impact of the hike in electricity charges in terms of social and revenue impact and provide it to the Government.
