
The cotton farmers of Ghana and Togo were accompanied on a study tour to one of the top cotton producing farms in Africa by Martin Vonghan, the Second Secretary for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the US Embassy. The farmers were educated on the Genetically Modified (GM) farms in Burkina Faso, the need to encourage the production of GM cotton. They were taught how after the adaption of GM cotton, the yields could increase unprecedently and help increase their livelihood economically. The study tour organised by the US embassy in view of the profitability concerns of cotton industry and environmental and health risks associated with the use of pesticides was appreciated by the cotton producers association of the country.
