An innovative project called Development of Specialised Fire fighting Suit has received support from the National Technical Textile Mission (NTTM).
Firefighting and emergency services, the military, the oil and gas sector, aerospace and aviation, power plants and thermal industries, all employ these specialised firefighter suits.
Specialised firefighting suits, often referred to as fire entrance suits, are now imported mostly from China, the United States, and Europe into India, where firefighting suit manufacturing is still in its infancy. The Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA) and M/s System 5S Private Ltd., its industrial partner, are working together to implement the NTTM project.
Approximately 1000 sets would be consumed annually by different end users in India. However, usage might increase dramatically if an Indian Certified Aluminised suit is introduced. With this commercialisation, M/s SYSTEM 5S Pvt. Ltd. can produce 1000 outfits annually.
The entire body, including the head, hands, and feet, must be shielded from radiant heat and flame impingement by protective clothing for specialised firefighting, as per EN 1486, a European Standard for protective clothing for firefighters. This protective gear consists of over boots, gloves, an integrated or separate hood, and a garment.
In accordance with ISO 15538 or EN 1486, M/s System 5S Private Ltd has created the indigenous Specialised Fire Fighting Suit. The suit is made of FR (Flame Resistant) viscose fabric, aluminised coated glass textiles, and OPAN (Oxidised Polyacrylonitrile) nonwoven battings. Quilting is used to join all of the inner layers.
