Chittagong Customs Commissioner Faizur Rahman said the Customs Department is very cordial in the speedy completion of export and import-related activities of the apparel industry, especially those needed amid the ongoing crisis across the world.
The Commissioner made the remarks while exchanging views with the BGMEA leaders at his office.
BGMEA First Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam said the export-oriented RMG industry is considered the backbone of the country’s economy. The sector is working hard to survive despite the industry facing competition from neighbouring countries amid the adverse global situation.
“The government is able to sustain a position of support with all the stakeholders. Our market is completely based on international buyers, so buyers’ desires are important. Buyers always consider their options in placing orders, which depend upon trust, acceptability, and competence,” he added.
BGMEA Vice President Rakbul Alam Chowdhury said the sector has suffered an image crisis much more than economic losses. Many buyers have cancelled their orders from Bangladesh. Customs have their way of extending their support in terms of short shifting, HS Code complications in import, weight and cartoon-related problems, etc.
BGMEA Directors M Ehsanul Hque, Amzad Hossain Chowdhury, Rakib Al-Naser, Gazi Md. Shahidullah, senior officials of the customs house were also present on the occasion among others.
