In a very sad incident, around 28 garment workers were killed in flooded factory in Morocco – a North African country bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.
The incident took place when heavy rains flooded an illegal garment factory in the northern Moroccan city of Tangier. The state television quoted a medical official giving this news.
As per the media reports, local authorities said that firefighters and emergency workers saved 10 people from the factory, in the basement of a residential villa. The search, however, continued for other trapped workers.
There wasn’t any information on how many workers were there at the site when the incident occurred. An investigation has opened.
An unidentified woman, who emerged from the flooded basement, said that nobody was prepared for the flash flood.
It is pertinent to mention here that to meet the fast-growing international demands, many factories in Morocco, especially in Casablanca and Tangier, depend on unregulated shadow factories to speed up production and meet deadlines.
Factories subcontract to such illegal units to compete better with cheaper Chinese and Turkish products.
Notably, these illegal hidden factories are mainly situated in residential areas and employ around 40 people that also include minors.
