The government is considering the establishment of an economic zone in the gas-rich Bhola district after several reputed companies expressed interest in setting up operations there.
The assurance was conveyed at a view-exchange meeting, attended by Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Advisor Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, Industries Advisor Adilur Rahman Khan and Commerce Advisor Sk Bashir Uddin. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Bhola M. Azad Jahan.
Speaking at the meeting, Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan said the government would prioritise industrial use of gas rather than domestic supply. He noted that while natural gas is scarce in many parts of the country, Bhola has an abundant reserve that could support industrial development.
Industries Advisor Adilur Rahman Khan told reporters after the meeting that the availability of gas in Bhola presented a significant opportunity, particularly for Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector, which has been struggling with gas shortages affecting production.
According to data from Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX), Bhola has a confirmed gas reserve of 2.24 trillion cubic feet (TCF).
