As part of its ongoing technology investments, Zalando has acquired augmented reality expert DeepAR. By creating 3D assets at scale and integrating 3D experiences across the brand’s platform, the acquisition will support the e-commerce behemoth’s 3D strategy.
According to Zalando, DeepAR will contribute to further “bridging the gap between physical and digital shopping” and will continue to operate independently under its new ownership. The move coincides with a number of 3D efforts being implemented by the German e-commerce platform, such as 3D items and a virtual fitting room that was first unveiled in 2023.
General Manager of Zalando in the UK, Ireland, and France According to Laura Toledano, the UK market is renowned for being both fashion-savvy and inventive. He is therefore thrilled that we are making the investment to house London-based start-up Deep AR under Zalando.
He continued by saying that being able to provide 3D experiences and information on a large scale will improve online purchasing, further bridging the gap between digital and physical shopping, and strengthening ties with customers in the UK and abroad.
Matthias Haase, vice president of content solutions at Zalando, said Through this transaction, Zalando obtains access to DeepAR’s best-in-class ShopAR platform, 3D technology, talent, and rapid innovation capabilities, while DeepAR gains access to Zalando’s fashion, technology, and expanding operations skills.
