Lenzing, the well-known Austria-based fibre producer, has joined hands with the Hong Kong-based technology firm TextileGenesis in its efforts to attain digital traceability of fibres.
The company has said that the partnership will help Lenzing utilise the blockchain technology to enhance its production of fibres to ensure garment manufacturers and brands of transparency and conclusive certification.
Expressing delight over the partnership, Stefan Doboczky, CEO, Lenzing Group, said “Associating ourselves with TextileGenesis will help us create an unmatched level of transparency for brands and consumers. This step will enable us to further green up the textile industry.”
Reportedly, Lenzing will be running some pilot tests in the coming months along the complete value chain and intends to go fully operational by 2020.
What makes the partnership interesting is that TextileGenesis is headed by Amit Gautam, who was the former Lenzing Global Vice President Business Management Textiles. “The blockchain technology takes a ‘decentral’ approach to authentication based on blockchain-based digital tokens and that is its biggest advantage, unlike centralised approach, which is based on file or PDF-based authentication system.
The QR code on the clothes will help the shoppers identify the origin of the clothes they plan to buy.
