Finally, after almost 6 years, National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at Meghalaya (Northeastern state of India) is all set to have its permanent campus.
And who else but our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be inaugurating it in all probability.
Back in September 2013, the then Union Textile Minister Kavuru Sambasiva Rao and Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had laid the base for the construction of the permanent campus of NIFT Shillong.
The present Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani, reviewed the construction work of NIFT and said that the work will be completed soon and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in all likelihood will inaugurate it in November.
The minister laid the foundation stone of the Integrated Textiles Tourism Complex at Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi district in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. The establishment of the complex will boost the handloom industry of Ri-Bhoi as well as promote textile tourism.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Modi Government has focused on developing textile industry in Northeastern Indian states and has allocated enough fund for the same.
The minister also informed that Centre will skill 30,000 people in Meghalaya under the ‘Samarth’ scheme in apparel, textiles and handloom sectors.
Operational since 2008, NIFT Shillong has one of the most beautiful NIFT campuses in the country, and as of now there are total 16 campuses of NIFT across India.
