Bangladesh’s apparel makers have identified mid-level management as a key area to which the industry can add value and expand it further.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturer and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Siddiqur Rahman says a trained mid-level management can add US $ 6 billion value to the industry.
“Expats from Sri Lanka, Vietnam, India and other countries are working in the mid-management and taking away US $ 6 billion every year,” BGMEA Chief underlined.
He was speaking at the certificate-handing function of the country’s first-ever batch of trained mid-level managers for the apparel industry in Dhaka today (Friday).
Speakers at the programme said the vision to undertake the “Capacity Development Programme for Mid-level Managers of RMG Industry” is to develop the capacity of Bangladeshis in the garment sector at the mid-level.
Such development of mid-managers is important to add value to the chain of Bangladesh’s apparel industry and achieve the target of US $ 50 billion export by 2021.
Faruque Hassan, Senior Vice President of BGMEA, lauded the initiative and said mid-managers can bridge the gap between top management and workers in order to attain an overall efficiency of a garment manufacturing factory.
Further, Md Nasir, Vice President (Finance) of BGMEA, hopes such capacity building can be effectively adopted in practice towards the interest of Bangladesh’s apparel sector.
Khadija Khondakar, Programme Officer of International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) Bangladesh Chapter, added that the capacity building will not only add value but also work to boost the confidence of the management.
A total of 52 participants were handed the certificates by Centre of Excellence for Bangladesh Apparel Industry (CEBAI) after the end of a 13-week training on mid-level management at the function.
Among those present at the programme were CEBAI’s CEO Brig Gen Aftab Uddin Ahmed and CEBAI President and former BGMEA President Atiqul Islam.
