Around 130 factories are yet to pay their workers the salary for the month of June. This was confirmed by an official data released recently.
The numbers are just shocking!
Out of these 130 factories, 62 are members of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, better known as BGMEA and 9 others are in association with Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA). Seven are associated with Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA).
The remaining 52 are non-readymade garment factories, as confirmed by data available with Industrial Police (IP).
These factories, under IP’s purview, are located at Gazipur, Narayanganj, Chattogram, Mymensingh and Ashulia.
Meanwhile, IP has prepared a list of 328 factories (including garment and textile units) that may witness unrest ahead of Eid owing to non-payment of wages and other allowances.
Dr Rubana Huq, President, BGMEA, said that the trade body was closely monitoring the situation. She added that while most of the factories have paid salary to workers for the month of June, around 63 factories could not pay due to financial constraints.
Contradicting the views of BGMEA President, the labour leaders claim that over 100 garment units are yet to pay the wages for June.
