Muji is relaunching its high-end clothing line in Australia under a fresh design direction after a successful rollout in Europe and the US. The Japanese lifestyle brand hopes that Labo, by Ryohin Keikaku, will enhance its subdued, minimalist presence with a sophisticated design language and distinctive materials. It is exclusively available at a few stores in Melbourne and Sydney.
Certain materials, such as a lightweight blend of organic cotton and traditional washi material, are specifically Japanese and were sourced by the firm. Other materials include Tibetan yak wool from nomadic farmers, which is extraordinarily soft and warmer than Merino wool, and cashmere from the Eastern Mongolian Plateau, which is left undyed to honour the fabric’s natural beauty.
Additionally featured in the latest collection are recycled wool and cashmere from the Bishu region of Aichi Prefecture, Japan; lyocell silk; and khadi, a handwoven, organic cotton from Kolkata.
The brand has gained international recognition for its exquisite shapes and meticulous craftsmanship in the redesigned Muji Labo series. Drawing inspiration from modern Japanese and Western minimalism, the brand’s classic clothing is both fluid and architectural, showcasing its distinctive simplicity.
Arriving today, the first drop will feature basic layers perfect for early autumn, including breathable innerwear staples, low-gauge knits, and clothing made of silk, cotton, and washi.
