Is Kolkata really and finally becoming an attractive apparel manufacturing destination? If the industry sources are to be believed, investments in the tune of three-digit crores are being planned. I strongly believe in ‘natural industry growth’ rather ‘ribbon cutting growth’ of politically motivated apparel parks. And what I understand from different quarters is that there are strong positive vibes. There are large (sometimes unrealistically overambitious) investments already done, or in the pipeline. Yes, there may be few cases of over-invoicing to grab Government benefits, but few indicators need not be missed or ignored.
During late 90s NCR had seen similar large investments with capital intensive (over-invoiced!) factories with ex-pat consultants abound. And there was no looking back; that can be called the watershed moment of the spurt of growth in NCR, what we see today. Is Kolkata under Didi’s leadership priming for the same? There’s also news that manufacturing facilities are running in full capacities and looking for the additional capacity, few Sri Lankan expats are now based in Kolkata, are these not positive vibes? The most heartening news is one small manufacturing setup from a tea estate owner in an obscure town of Siliguri (in North Bengal); an offspring grown naturally out of necessity! Way to go Kolkata! My best wishes!
