Germany-based VDMA Textile Machinery Federation and Walter Reiners Foundation recently honoured five young engineers with a total of € 17,500. The award ceremony took place at the Digital Capability Center (DCC) in Aachen, Germany where numerous entrepreneurs from the German textile industry marked their presence.
The award winner in the dissertation category was Dr. – Ing. Benjamin Weise who is associated with the Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University (ITA). Weise was recognized for his work in dealing with a complex production process of modified multi filament yarns that offer new perspectives for the development of textile charge carriers.
The winner of the Master’s thesis category was Susanne Fischer (M.Sc.) who systematically and comprehensively solved the challenging task of integrating motion sensors into a finger glove at Reutlingen University, Germany.
Further, creativity award winners include Jan Merlin Abram and Alon Tal from ITA Aachen as well as Eric Otto who belongs to the Institute for Textile Machinery and High-Performance Textile Materials Technology (ITM) in Dresden. The team of Abram and Tal developed a guideline to design hybrid morphing textiles. Functionally effective joint, torsion, expansion and compression mechanisms can be integrated into these textiles in addition to the classic functions in conventional and composite applications.
On the other hand, a concept study of Otto for the development of a circular knitting machine with a variable diameter needle cylinder earned him the award. His study can further lead to flexibility in the circular knitting process.
Peter D. Dornier, the member of the Executive Board, VDMA Textile Machinery Federation and Chairman of the Walter Reiners Foundation handed over these awards to the students.
It’s worth mentioning here that the foundation provides an incentive for top performers by granting two promotion prizes for dissertations and master/diploma thesis as well as one creativity prize for seminar papers every year.
