SGS India, world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, organized a training-cum-seminar on ‘US Federal & State Product Safety Requirements’ for apparel industry professionals at its Gurgaon and Bangalore offices. Dr. Karen Kyllo, Deputy Vice President of the Global Softlines Business, SGS shared a comprehensive overview of the US State laws and regulations on trade and product quality standards which are mandated for exporters to the US.
Much importance was laid on the State laws to reduce the exposure of children and adults to harmful chemicals and the need for further study and tests to evaluate the chemicals used during product manufacturing to assess their impact on human health and environment. Industry participants (apparel industry professionals) gained useful insights and knowledge on California Prop 65 (The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986) which applies to all products sold in California. This aims to reduce exposure levels to carcinogenic chemicals and chemicals known to cause reproductive toxicity.
The Act covers nearly 850 chemicals which are banned for use in different products i.e. Apparels/Footwear/Handbags/Luggage, etc. The sessions also covered new updates related to warning labels instructions on various products.
