Hirdaramani Group – the Sri Lankan apparel manufacturing giant has set up its 21st facility in Mullaitivu Sri Lanka, and the 35th facility in its global portfolio. Boasting of a fully-integrated infrastructure, the unit is equipped with manufacturing, product development, design, printing, embroidery, washing and packaging facilities.

Fully-owned and operated by the Hirdaramani Group, the unit’s setup has been supplemented with CSR and sustainability programmes in the region. A training centre has also been set up to provide employees with the skills they need to fulfil a cross-section of roles in the factory. The training centre through specially tailored programmes, helps motivate staff and provides them with the knowledge and training they need to excel in their jobs, it also helps them to strengthen a variety of skills.

 

Brandix and WSO2 partner for 2015 MIT Global Startups Challenge

The hunt festival for Sri Lanka’s ‘big idea’ technology startups will commence with the 2015 Global Startup Labs (GSL) Sri Lanka Challenge. As the principal sponsor of the MIT-GSL Sri Lanka Challenge, Brandix will assist in conducting it, quoted a release from Brandix. This year, Brandix will be joined by WSO2, an open source technology company to support this programme run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). WSO2 will host the selected teams at the company’s office premises in Colombo and will provide guidance and valuable insights into successfully running a startup. The programme is scheduled to take place from 22nd June to 7th August 2015 and invites undergraduates, graduates, working professionals and others who have innovative ideas for technology startups. It will consist of three phases – ‘Ideate’, ‘Plan & Create’, and ‘Refine & Launch’.

TJL acquires Quenby Lanka

Textured Jersey Lanka (TJL) has acquired Quenby Lanka Prints (Pvt.) Ltd. “In February 2015, TJL initiated the valuation and due diligence study for the potential acquisition and subsequent to discussions, a purchase price of US $ 3.5 million was agreed upon. Reflecting the strength of a strong balance sheet, the entire consideration is due to be paid out in cash to the shareholders of Quenby Lanka in order to acquire the shares of the company,” as per the release from TJL.

The acquisition is expected to boost the business integration process and take TJL to the next level of solutions and innovation.

Sri Lankan Government working on minimum wages for private sector employees

Reportedly the Sri Lankan Labour Ministry will present a legislation to set a minimum wage for all private sector employees shortly. The Draft Bill has stipulated that the minimum monthly wage of any private sector employee to be US $ 74.84, regardless of whether the employee falls under categories named under the Shop and Office Act or the Wages Board Act. Labour and Labour Relations Ministry Secretary Herath Yapa said that the proposed legislation will benefit more than 1.5 million private sector employees in the country, including the apparel and textile sector workforce.

“This is the first time such a minimum wage has been introduced across the board. Neither trades in neither the Wages Board nor the categories in the Shop and Office Act have a stipulated minimum wage. Contributions to EPF, ETF and gratuity payments should be calculated on this wage once the Bill is passed,” said Minister of Labor SB Nawinna.

Net Profits up 46 per cent at Textured Jersey

Textured Jersey Lanka registered a 46 per cent surge in net profits for the fourth fiscal quarter that ended on March 31, 2015. According to Bill Lam, Chairman of the company, the strong quarterly performance enabled the company conclude the year with a record profit despite the slowdown in sales experienced in the early part of the year. Lam further added that the prospects of GSP+ being reinstated in the future would further help the company to capitalize on the current momentum.

Fire breaks out at Brandix Lanka premises

Recently a fire broke out in the premises of Sri Lankan apparel manufacturing factory Brandix located in the Board of Investment’s export processing zone in Katunayake. Reportedly, the fire broke out around 7.30 am on 13 April 2015. It was doused with the assistance of the Katunayake Police and the fire brigade units of the Board of Investment and Aviation Services Department. The cause of the fire or the extent of damages has not been ascertained yet.

Hayleys MGT Knitting Mills launches its own knitted fabrics brand ‘INNO’

Sri Lankan Hayleys MGT Knitting Mills, the fabric subsidiary of Hayleys Group has reportedly launched its own knitted fabrics brand called INNO. The brand was launched through the company’s own Innovation Centre, in order to supply new fashion value-added and functional fabric requirements to the current market. “We aim to take the company to the next level in the fabric industry. With the launch of ‘Inno’ we have become the top Innovation Centre for weft knitted fabrics locally,” Rohan Goonetilleke, MD, Hayleys MGT said. Hayleys MGT Knitting Mills, located at a 34 acre site at Narthupana Estate in Horana, is a diversified fabric mill with a capacity of 1,000 tonnes/month to knit, dye and finish all types of knitted fabrics such as cottons, cotton blends, polyester, polyester blends, viscose and micro modals. It also has the capability of in-house printing with 16 colour printing machines, fabric brushing machines and suedeing machines.

EU Ambassador assures Sri Lanka’s President over GSP

Appreciating the new Sri Lankan Government’s thrust on human rights and democratic institutions, the European Union Ambassador to Sri Lanka David Daly revealed that the EU is re-evaluating Sri Lanka’s request to grant the GSP+ concession once again for Sri Lankan exports to EU. President Maithripala Sirisena expressed his thanks to the EU for the support given to Sri Lanka in the past and expressed hope that the cooperation between the EU and Sri Lanka would be strengthened in the coming years. The GSP plus trade concessions were withdrawn from Sri Lanka after the previous Government failed to meet certain conditions on human rights issues.

Apparels have become Sri Lanka’s topmost merchandise exports earner. The sector is now readying to touch the milestone of US $ 5 billion worth of exports. Country’s apparel exports in 2014 were at US $ 4.9 billion increasing by 9.2 per cent from 2013. Ministry of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen, said: “We believe GSP Plus door may open for us. Sri Lankan apparel manufacturing sector is now at G4 levels with even the large global fashion brand portfolio owners such as PVH Corporation directly partnering with us on their speed orders. Our Industry Completing Cycle is short 4-5 days up-to shipping, and we can readily supply premium apparels to Sweden and Nordic region as a result. Close to one third of our exports to Sweden are apparels”. Sri Lanka and the EU recently held discussions to reinstate the sought after GSP Plus trade concession to boost Sri Lanka’s apparel exports, another coveted technical breakthrough has been extended to Sri Lanka through a surging EU economy.

Lankan textiles exports grow by 9.4 per cent in 2014

As per the data released by Economics Research Department of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the export of textiles and garments from Sri Lanka increased by 9.4 per cent to US $ 4.929 billion in 2014 as  compared to exports of US $ 4.508 billion in 2013.  The 9.4 per cent growth rate registered by the textiles and garment exports was greater than 6.5 per cent and 7 per cent growth rates witnessed by Sri Lankan industrial exports and total exports during the year, the data showed.  Textiles and clothing constituted 59.75 per cent of Sri Lankan industrial exports and 44.34 per cent of all exports made by Sri Lanka in 2014.  On the other hand, the import of textiles and textile articles by Sri Lanka grew by 13.8 per cent to US $ 2.327 billion in 2014, as against imports of US $ 2.045 billion made in the previous year.

Brandix Group bags Gold at National HRM Awards, second time in a row

Sri Lankan Brandix Group  has bagged a Gold award for Human Resource Management and a Special Category Award for “Leadership and Key Talent Management”. The awards were presented to the Lankan intimate wear manufacturing pioneer at the National HRM Awards presented by the Association of Human Resource Professionals in conjunction with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). This was the second successive Gold Award presented to Brandix at the National HRM Awards, which were last presented in 2012. 

The criteria for assessing the nominees included assessment of HR and business engagement practices, HR interaction with the leadership and across HR planning, hiring, employee relations, performance and talent management, career and leadership development, training and capability development; access to resources, compensation, rewards and recognition, people administration, communication, working environment, health and wellbeing, retention practices, branding and exit management.
