Oman Expo in collaboration with the Iranian Embassy has organized a five-day Iranian products exhibition for trade exchange between the Sultanate and Iran, to provide SMEs owners with opportunities to expand their projects and strike new commercial deals. The exhibition that includes textile, leather products, machinery, Persian carpets, furniture, etc will go on till January 10, 2015. The fair has been specifically organized to enhance trade relations between the two countries.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF), Oman, has started restoring the local cotton variety farming in the country with an aim to cultivate up to 120 acres of land in the coming years. The revival project was started in 2013, when MoAF managed to farm 3,150 square metres of land. The project is funded by Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund. The ministry has also collaborated with the Public Authority for Craft Industries (PACI) to revitalize cultivation of the local cotton variety to supply raw material to local textile firms. The project is also significant as it makes sure the protection of genetic resources of local plants.
There has been a revival in the traditional Bedouin textiles used as carpets, tents, throws and clothing , with modern designers like IDC (Innovative Design Center) looking at these culture-influenced designs. Modern conveniences in fabric and furniture manufacturing in Oman, now allow these contemporary designs to be affordably implemented in interior design schemes, or simply to add a splash of modern tradition onto the existing furniture. Influenced by some of the world’s greatest designers, such as Roche Bubois, IDC has embarked on creating their own bespoke range of textile designs and fabrics which are inspired by Bedouin tradition, but executed with contemporary flair and styling.
