Despite all the efforts of Union and various State Governments, NGOs, political parties and other stakeholders of the society, problems of migratory workers continue – it’s the same story in every apparel and textile manufacturing hub in the country be it Tirupur, Delhi-NCR, Ludhiana and Surat, among others.
As per a report of Hindustan Times, a leading English daily, in Ludhiana, many garment factory workers gathered at the local administration office and raised their issues strongly.
With thousands of small and big units, Ludhiana is one of the leading Indian hubs of knitted fabrics and garments.
Here it is important to note that as per official data, 16 lakh migrants have applied to go back to their home states, of which around 50 per cent are from Ludhiana.
“A group of garment factory employees, who walked all the way from Tajpur Road, was seen arguing with the security guard at the Deputy Commissioner (DC) office. Mohd Tazim, of Araria district of Bihar said that despite having a booking, they were denied to travel on a train to Bihar,” the paper writes.
These workers were told to get medical clearance for travelling in the bus. Though the workers managed to get the clearance after lot of struggle, it all went in vain as no information regarding the buses was shared with them by any official.
The workers said that the officials misbehaved with them and only those who bribed the agents and middlemen reached their villages.
The scene is no different in other hubs as well!
Though factories have resumed operation in many hubs, majority of the workers want to go back to their villages rather than working in factories, as a result of which factories are also facing shortage of workers.
And it seems these worries will continue for some more time!
