Export and import activities through the Chittagong port were severely affected for the second day in a row owing to the students’ nationwide non-cooperation action, which resulted in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
Assessment activities for imported and exported goods resumed normally, however, clearance of imported items remained delayed, according to a customs and port official. In the last 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday, around 1,175 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers were cleared from the port, down from the daily normal of around 7,000-8,000 TEUs.
According to port officials, the transit of cargo containers heading for the Kamalapur inland container depot has also been halted due to the closure of railway wagons for the second day in succession.
All officers are working as usual, but just a few importers and agents have arrived to release their products, according to Chittagong Customs House Commissioner Mohammad Fyzur Rahman.
