Stefan Lofven on Wednesday called Sheikh Hasina to confirm that his country would continue to import apparels from Bangladesh and there won’t be any order cancellations.
“We will continue importing RMG products from Bangladesh,” reportedly assured the Swedish Premier in his around 15-minute-long telephonic conversation with Sheikh Hasina, in reply to which his Bangladesh counterpart said that Bangladesh is hopeful of meeting the buyers’ orders including that from Sweden despite the current situation in the country due to COVID-19 outbreak.
The two Prime Ministers also discussed on mutual trade, including readymade garments.
The large-scale order cancellations by global buyers have put the countries’ apparel sector in a precarious position.
As to the latest reports of order cancellations, among the prominent names from UK that have cancelled work orders are Day’s Peacocks, Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group, Sir Philip Green’s Arcadia, New Look, Asda and Debenhams.
New Look, which initially cancelled 20 per cent of its orders from Bangladesh, has now reportedly reinstated around £6.8 million worth of business while Asda is said to have cancelled around 5 per cent of orders from Bangladeshi suppliers.
