Thanks to available alternative sources within Africa, textile mill owners and spinners in Bangladesh feel the ongoing conflict in Sudan will not have much of an impact on Bangladesh’s cotton import from the African country (Sudan).
Citing industry players reports further maintained other than Sudan other West African countries like Lesotho, Benin and Chad are vital sources of cotton for importers in Bangladesh even if as per data from the Bangladesh Cotton Mills Association (BTMA), in fiscal year 2019-20, African countries provided 37.3 per cent of Bangladesh’s total cotton requirement even as this percentage has now gone up to more than 40 per cent, as per the Additional Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the BTMA.
It may be mentioned here Sudan is currently in turmoil, especially in the capital Khartoum where armed clashes are on between the powerful paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces and the military.
