Entrepreneurs and shippers have called for dedicated arrangements for better bulk cargo handling at the Chittagong Port even as it has been said that no new jetty has been built at the port for unloading goods from bulk carriers since independence even if 45 per cent of incoming vessels are bulkers and there’s been more than 9 per cent bulk cargo handling growth in the recent years.
This is as per media reports, which underlined the shippers and the businesses demanded separate arrangements and new jetties for bulk cargo carriers to reduce the cost of business even if as per the port data, about 45 per cent of the ships bringing goods from different countries are bulk carriers, 45 per cent are container ships and 10 per cent are tankers.
They also reportedly said, for bulk carriers, the port has reserved only those jetties of the General Cargo Berth with a draught of 8.5 metres while jetties with 9.5 metres draught are dedicated for container carriers.
