Even as India continues to be a strongly emerging apparel export destination for Bangladesh, the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, Vikram Kumar Doraiswami recently maintained logistical constraint is the biggest barrier towards expanding trade between the two countries.
As per media reports, Vikram Kumar Doraiswami, reportedly, maintained this at a discussion on ‘50 years of Bangladesh-India Partnership: Towards a Journey in Next 50 Years’, organised by New Delhi-based Research and Information System for Developing Countries and Bangladesh’s Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) jointly, recently in Dhaka.
Speaking at the said event, the India High Commissioner, reportedly, underlined most of the bilateral trade takes place through one point, the Benapole-Petrapole border, and this, reportedly, essentially created some vested interests.
…as a result, the cost of trade remains high, reportedly, claimed the Indian High Commissioner while adding that India wants more border checkpoints to be functional and is ready to help in this regard through grant-based projects.
There is a clear necessity to look at the trade relationship in a way that benefits both countries, further, reportedly, maintained Vikram Kumar Doraiswami while adding for that to happen, both the countries need to look at the critical issues even as he underlined there are fundamental problems in business discourse.
