Textile traders in the Indian state of Gujarat are reportedly still not content with the GST implementation. The GST Council has made a lot of changes since the execution of the tax regime, like lowering the rates on various segments/products.
The Government recently announced to reduce the GST rate on yarns from 18 per cent to 12 per cent and increase in basic customs duty on polyester fabric imports from 10 per cent to 20 per cent. Relief in the filing of GST returns was also pronounced.
However, the textile traders in the state feel these measures are just to appease the sulking industry ahead of the assembly polls next month.
According to those related to the textile industry, the reforms are like a drop in the ocean to help the struggling industry post implementation of GST.
Ashok Jirawala, President, Federation of Gujarat Weavers’ Association (FOGWA) feels that the damage has already been done to the textile industry.
On the contrary, some are also praising the Government for the relief provided.
Pandesara Weavers Cooperative Society Ltd. President Ashish Gujarati while talking to a business daily said that the Government is finally taking some steps to support the industry.
“However, the Government is yet to take a call on most of our demands,” he added.
