A study conducted as a part of GIZ’s Operator to Supervisor Training Programme yet again brought to the fore the impact of gender bias in career progress prospects of female workforce in the Bangladeshi garment manufacturing industry. The study highlighted the stark contrast between the total percentage of female workforce (85 per cent) in the industry and the percentage of women supervisors (5-10 per cent). The research was led by Chris Woodruff and Rocco Macchiavello, both professors at the UK’s University of Warwick. The researchers suggested providing female line operators with vocational training to help women reach managerial posts as it would enhance the skill endowment in factories.
