Garment manufacturers in Bangladesh took a loan of around Taka 8,000 crore from the stimulus packages announced by the Government in April to pay the workers’ wages and try overcome the economic fallouts of the coronavirus pandemic.
However, considering the lingering pandemic-induced uncertainties, they now want to pay back the loan in in 60 instalments over a period of 5 years instead of the stipulated 18 instalments in 2 years’ time with 2 per cent service charge.
Responding to the garment exporters’ plea, the Commerce Ministry has requested the Finance Ministry as well as the country’s central bank (Bangladesh Bank) to consider the same, claimed media reports citing Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi.
He thus requested the Bangladesh Bank and the Ministry of Finance to allow the apparel exporters pay back the loan in 60 instalments over 5 years’ time period, claimed the report.
The report further underlined that the garment makers’ demand was pending yet with the Finance Ministry, citing a senior official of the concerned ministry in this regard.
