Chittagong Goods Port Yard, designated for containers bound for ICD, is overflowing as a result of a five-day suspension of train services due to floods in late August and a 27-day suspension of railway services beginning on 18th July amid the countrywide student movement.
Roughly 70 per cent of the cargo entering the port originates from importers located in and around Dhaka. Roads and rivers remove the remaining percentage, with railroads removing about 3 percent of those.
There are no obstacles that prevent the yard intended for the containers destined for Kamalapur ICD from operating at maximum capacity of 1,774 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). However, up until the first week of August, 2,700 TEUs had been crammed inside.
A top official in the Chittagong Port Authority’s traffic department claims that things have recently improved and that train traffic has partially returned to normal.
He said that as of Sunday, the yard had 1,278 TEUs. He did admit, though, that a few of them had been there for up to 17 or 18 days.
According to Abdul Malek, the Chittagong Goods Port Yard (CGPY) railway station master, three or four trains depart daily for the Dhaka ICD.
