China wants to invest in solar panels in order to strengthen its commercial connections with Bangladesh. This was disclosed by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a meeting with Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on Wednesday at the UN headquarters in New York, outside of the General Assembly.
Wang Yi underlined China’s resolve to support Chinese solar panel producers that want to set up plants in Bangladesh—a request recently expressed by Yunus in a meeting with the Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh.
The significance of cultivating enhanced collaboration and alliances between enterprises from both countries was emphasised by the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs. He said that Bangladesh would gain from China’s decision to provide duty-free entry for goods from developing nations.
Wang Yi also mentioned that during the protests in July and August, the Chinese Red Cross had sent a group of medical professionals to assist people who were gravely hurt. He also praised the rise in Bangladeshi students enrolled in Chinese universities.
Professor Yunus responded by thanking China for these steps and praising its amazing efforts to pull millions out of poverty. He proposed that more firms move their operations to Bangladesh and urged Chinese businesses to think about making larger investments there.
In addition to pushing for the “opening of a new chapter” in bilateral relations and an increase in technical cooperation between their respective industries, the Chief Advisor made a case for closer engagement with China.
