Canada has been stagnant in its apparel imports of late. In July ’18, Canada imported apparels worth US $ 1,053.71 million, marking a marginal surge of 1.87 per cent over July ’17 when the North American country imported apparels valued at US $ 1,034.40 million.
However, cumulatively, Canada grew by 4.11 per cent during January to July ’18 period to import US $ 5,413 million worth of apparels. Bangladesh is somehow losing this market as well as China, which is too fluctuating in its apparel export to Canada, providing India and ASEAN countries an opportunity to grab the shifting business.
China’s shipment to Canada stood at US $ 1,997.88 million in the 7-month period this year growing by just 1.06 per cent. On the other hand, Bangladesh shipped US $ 651.23 million worth of apparels to Canada and plunged by 0.60 per cent on a Y-o-Y basis.
Particularly in July, Bangladesh fell by 14.46 per cent to ship US $ 113.74 million worth of apparels as compared to US $ 128.20 million shipment value in July ’17. The drop was noted as a shift, which is continuously being seen towards Cambodia and Vietnam which were quite positive in their respective apparel export to Canada during the said period.
Cambodia jumped significantly by 10.60 per cent and exported apparels worth US $ 503.05 million in the first 7 months of 2018. While Vietnam too capitalised on the ASEAN trade benefits and upped by 14.93 per cent to ship US $ 487 million worth of apparels to Canada.
It’s worth mentioning here that ASEAN’s share in total Canadian apparel import value stood at 23.21 per cent in January to July ’18, whereas the share in the same period previous year was 22.10 per cent.
India too experienced a slight escalation (3.81 per cent) and export to Canada valued at US $ 203.40 million as compared to US $ 195.92 million in the corresponding period last year.
