Businesses in Bangladesh’s port city of Chittagong have reportedly called upon India cut non-tariff barriers while demanding enhancement of the port infrastructure of both countries to facilitate movement of goods.
As per media reports, businesses made this request of cutting the non-tariff barriers so as to reduce the trade gap and boost Bangladesh’s exports to India during a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami, at an event organised by the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) recently.
Former Vice President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) SM Abu Tayab among other business leaders like Aameir Alihussain (Managing Director of Bangladesh Steel Re-Rolling Mills), Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun (a Director of the CCCI), took part in the meeting chaired by the CCCI President Mahbubul Alam.
Speaking on the occasion, Doraiswami, reportedly, said the trade, maritime and manufacturing sectors in Chittagong have huge potentials, and Chittagong Port is being considered as the gateway to this region while adding that Bangladesh and India need to take initiatives for the development of sea, river and land ports to enhance bilateral trade.
