Facing international criticism and fear of business losses, the country’s leading garment makers have finally woken up to improve working conditions in the industry. Taking the help of International Labour Organization (ILO) to establish a better industrial relationship between the workers and the factory managements, the authorities are working on how to implement ‘Better Work Programme’ in the industry.
Lejo Sibbel, ILO’s senior design adviser of the ‘Better Work Programme’, and Md. Shafiul Islam, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), discussed the details of the programme at a meeting held recently at the BGMEA office in the capital.
Earlier in 2009 also the US Department of Labour had instructed the Bangladesh Government to implement the ILO’s ‘Better Work Programme’, according to a statement of the BGMEA.
